Say hello to some of the best new frozen treats in the Twin Cities mobile scene: Frio Frio. From one of the creative minds behind Angel Food Bakery in downtown Minneapolis, Katy Gerdes takes her love of all things sweet, delish, colorful, and twisted and applies it to one of the best things she knows to “spread the happy”: popsicles-- or as her and partner Chris like to call them, "Ice Lollies."
Their goal? To deliver more happy to the world. So far they seem to be doing just that with their colorful little cart, Frio Frio. Taking inspiration from classic Mexican paletas, Frio Frio crafts perfectly frozen goodies from fresh, pure fruit. With these flavor bases, Frio Frio twists in many delightful additions, creating combinations like Grapefruit-Carrot-Ginger, Strawberry-Balsamic-Basil, and Kiwi-Apple-Kale. This last one takes advantage of the tradition to suspend chunks of fruit in these Central-American popsicles, giving a beautifully big kiwi display right in the center.
The colorful and eye-popping results showcase Katy’s experience as a designer (did you know she was on Project Runway?!) and the popsicles themselves are absolutely divine. Perfectly icy without being too hard, they eat easy, and they’re just plain delicious. If I bought t-shirts on a regular basis, I’d totally get a “LICK HAPPY” one from them, for that really is what happens.
My personal favorites are the Avocado-Lime (love that super creamy rich green flavor and texture) and the Piñata. An insane invention, they start with a Lemon and Coconut Water popsicle, then take to suspending a kaleidoscope of Sprinkles and Gummy Bears inside. So childish, so immature, such a display of cheap sugar… and yet it somehow all works together perfectly. Who knew one could take the confected flavors of gummy bears to an almost gourmet level like this? Delightful! Next time I’m hoping to try some of the other flavors, like the Thai-Boba-Iced-Tea, Lemon-Meringue, and Roasted-Peach-Shandy.
As an intense surveyor and promoter of our own Food Truck/Mobile Vending Scene, I take pride in saying that Frio Frio is currently my absolute favorite new business to our streets this year; especially when it comes to dessert. I’ll admit my first thoughts were akin to “Not another one!” when first sighted, but the product speaks for itself. Though that won’t stop Katy and Chris from chatting with you for a while about popsicles and local fun. I sincerely implore readers to pay attention to any local event, street fair, or other such outdoorsy thing near you in the coming months. Go to it, hope that Frio Frio is there, and enjoy some delicious Ice Lollies.
